John P. Reitman has represented chapter 7 and 11 trustees, creditors committees and secured and unsecured creditors in complex bankruptcy cases for more than thirty years. Through his extensive litigation activities, Mr. Reitman has achieved recoveries of well in excess of $100 million for bankruptcy estates, successfully defended actions seeking the recovery of tens of millions of dollars, and achieved hundreds of millions of dollars in claims reductions. In major bankruptcy cases, he has been responsible for negotiating and documenting the sale of numerous multi-million dollar assets. In addition, Mr. Reitman has investigated alleged bankruptcy crimes and made criminal referrals of suspected bankruptcy crimes to the Government that resulted in criminal charges.

 

Representative bankruptcy cases handled by Mr. Reitman include the following:

In re Reed E. Slatkin and Substantively Consolidated Affiliates


Mr. Reitman was general counsel to the chapter 11 trustee and a successor liquidating trust in this $500 million Ponzi scheme case. He was in charge of litigating approximately 300 adversary actions, resulting in the recovery of approximately $90 million and claims objections that eliminated hundreds of millions of dollars in claims against the estate.

 

In re Kimila Ann Basinger 


As general counsel to the bankruptcy trustee, Mr. Reitman was instrumental in selling the estate’s assets, including a bank and real property in Braselton, Georgia, and resolving the debtor’s lengthy and well publicized dispute with Main Line Pictures.

In re Intermagnetics 


Mr. Reitman uncovered a $15 million fraud involving the debtor’s transfer of assets to a “straw man,” and subsequently, in a previously negotiated, hidden transaction for the benefit of the debtor’s owner and a co-conspirator, to an entity in The People’s Republic of China. Mr. Reitman also obtained a $60 million racketeering judgment against the perpetrator of that crime.

Outside of the bankruptcy context, Mr. Reitman has represented publicly and privately owned businesses as general and special counsel in connection with sophisticated business, real estate and securities issues and transactions.

 

Mr. Reitman has substantial experience in enforcing judgments and recovering assets outside of the United States, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, The Cayman Islands, The Channel Islands, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Liechtenstein, The Netherlands, The People’s Republic of China, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland.

Mr. Reitman is admitted to practice before all of the courts of the State of California; the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit; and the United States District Court, Central, Eastern, Northern and Southern Districts of California. He also is a panel mediator for the Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Reitman was with Gumport | Reitman as a founding partner and later as “of counsel.”

 

Mr. Reitman graduated from California State University, Northridge in 1974.  He received his J.D. Cum Laude from Loyola University School of Law in 1977, earning Law Review honors in 1975 and 1976.
