Monica Rieder began her career as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Christopher M. Klein, then the Chief Bankruptcy Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of California.

 

Ms. Rieder’s practice is varied, covering fields from commercial transactions and intellectual property to litigation and bankruptcy.  Ms. Rieder’s experience includes:

 

  • counseling corporate clients regarding significant commercial transactions and negotiating and drafting agreements to effectuate those transactions (notable examples include drafting a series of agreements that established the international manufacturing line for a medical device with over $1.5 billion in annual sales and drafting a settlement and license agreement that resolved extensive patent litigation between two multibillion-dollar companies);  
     

  • acting as intellectual property counsel to corporations, including negotiating and drafting IP provisions in commercial agreements and spending a year as part of a team seconded in as patent counsel to a Fortune 500 medical device and health care company;
     

  • handling numerous litigation matters, primarily in federal court (notable accomplishments include drafting and arguing summary judgment motions that resulted in seven-figure judgments for clients and drafting successful briefs and motions in appeals to the U.S. District Court, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and California Court of Appeals); and
     

  • representing debtors, trustees, creditors, and creditors' committees in numerous bankruptcy cases of corporations and high-profile/high-net-worth individuals (notable clients include the court-appointed bankruptcy trustee of Eagan Avenatti, LLP, the former law firm of notorious attorney Michael Avenatti; the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors of Fatburger Restaurants of California, Inc. and Fatburger Restaurants of Nevada, Inc.; Los Angeles World Airports, the owner and operator of LAX airport, as a creditor; and Amgen USA Inc., as a creditor, contract counter-party, and defendant in preference litigation).
